"CounterTorqueSteer" (countertorquesteer)

For all you Oppo Photographers: I will be shooting a client’s storefront tomorrow evening. He says that he wants it to look like a “Gallery in France”. I have shot architecture before, but never specifically at night. Do you have any suggestions/advice? Thanks!

Is that the building? I’d swing by at sunset and take shots at multiple exposures to minimize the higher temp white lights.
And Lightroom.

No, it’s just a building that I found on Google. The actual building is more “Greek” style. And yes, Lightroom is a must.

Take pictures of it when the power is out. Pure darkness is what drives high quality photography.

Make everything look like an 80s Michael Mann movie. That’s how you make it.

Tripod, remote release (or self timer), and try both long exposures and using your camera’s auto-HDR mode if it has one. I usually play with the HDR toning control panel in Photoshop CS6, not so much to create an overly-HDR looking result but because it gives you good control over highlights, shadows, etc. after you do your usual raw processing.

You’re welcome! Glad I could help. Can you provide an address for your subject? It would help to be able to see the building in question.

Unfortunately I don't have it yet. It will be in Annapolis, MD near the State House.

Basics like tripod with weight and a remote trigger. Watch your ISO and try to keep it lower but extend exposures. Do some test runs. Also remember that how late into evening past sunset or near early morning affects warmth.

Have you been able to review sample photos of the look he’s going for? A “Gallery in France” sounds rather vague to me.
This is the kind of stuff I picture when I think of the style he is describing but that could be way off from what either of you are picturing.

No problem. Another reason for some test pictures is outside lights that might come on a various times or by solar sensor could alter the situation because of the varied lighting spectrums. I’m by no means a great photographer but my dear departed mom was a semi-pro for a newspaper at one time. Some of her knowledge sometimes comes to good use. I can recall back in the day taking a night photo that came out with a lime-green cast because the film I used was sensitize to that color. Totally screwed up some great night car pics because of a bad street lamp.

I agree with the tripod and remote definitely. Long exposure is necessary for something like this so you might even get that red light bar of a car passing.
Maybe a dog. Dogs in front of buildings are very Frenchy.
Edit it to be Black and White and people smoking everywhere with berets. That’s very French. HON HON HON.
(Really only the first part is advice. The dog I highly recommend. The third part is a joke.)
